"Interested to read my good friend Huw Thomas's article on pulling plugs. Have to say Huw dont agree. When you drove here in N.Z. if youd taken your foot out of the stirrup you would have been fined 30 Quid. Admittedly the sulkies are different and this may have a big bearing re pulling by hand or foot. As you know i dont like the yankee carts which you use but thats Ok. We use hopple shortners here a lot for both stand and mobile starts. All pins pulled by hand and drivers are competent enough to not have any problems. i will throw a different slant on it . Jockeys can steer with one hand on the reigns and whip with the other. If they drop an iron they are in big trouble. I dont see a problem re using the stick in one hand with the other hand holding both reigns.
Up to the stewards to police excessive use of the whip. It is high time BHRC gets this soughted once and for all as it's giving the sport a bad image."
