Independent television companies are responsible for producing the majority of S4C’s programmes. The BBC provides over 10 hours a week of programming. ITV Wales also makes programmes for us.
A variety of programmes are broadcast on S4C, including live national events, sport, music, news, drama, entertainment, children, culture, rural and lifestyle.
In 2009 the Government will switch off the analogue signal in Wales. At that time, S4C will become a wholly Welsh-language service. English language Channel 4 programmes will no longer be broadcast on S4C as that channel will be freely available in Wales.
The Department for Culture, Media and Sport finances S4C. In 2007, the Channel will receive a grant of £94.4m from DCMS. S4C has the right to produce additional commercial income through the sales of programmes and advertising space, and through working with other broadcasters on co-productions.
